When is the
spreadsheet enough?
A spreadsheet can calculate a percentage. The harder part is keeping the source, the exception and the final decision together, pay period after pay period.
A spreadsheet
Flexible and familiar. You design the formulas, source references, review notes and version history yourself.
Trimsum
Imports itemised CSV rows, applies your flat service and retail agreements, brings questions forward and fixes the reviewed close.
Same source rows.
A different answer.
A fictional AUD example for one staff member: a service, a retail sale and a partial refund. The source report has no commission reversal on the refund.
Scroll the table sideways to see each calculation field →
| Source line | Signed sale | Tax | Basis | Rate | Commission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colour service | $220.00 | $20.00 | $200.00 | 40% | $80.00 |
| Retail product | $33.00 | $3.00 | $30.00 | 10% | $3.00 |
| Partial refund | −$110.00 | −$10.00 | −$100.00 | 40% | −$40.00 |
| Total shown in this view | $43.00 | ||||
The signed refund basis is −$100 after its −$10 tax is removed. At 40%, the potential reversal is −$40. After a supported review decision, $80 + $3 − $40 = $43.
A signed calculation shows the possible effect; it does not determine whether a commission deduction is permitted. Check your agreement and the original sale, then record the decision.
Read the refund methodChoose the work
you actually have.
Both approaches can work. The question is how often you close commissions and how much evidence the next reviewer needs.
Stay with a sheet when…
- The commission run is occasional and small.
- The rules are simple enough to check manually.
- You can preserve the original export and a dated copy of the formulas.
- You have a reliable way to record refund and duplicate decisions.
Use Trimsum when…
- You repeat the close weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
- Several people, service rates or retail rates need checking.
- Refunds, repeated rows and missing staff names need explicit decisions.
- You want a fixed record with source lines and the settings used at close.
Know the boundary.
Trimsum does not make the booking report or spreadsheet disappear. It imports an itemised CSV, needs your agreed rates and uses your decisions for exceptions. It does not sync live with Timely or Fresha, calculate wages, handle tiered commission or send a payment.
